Practical Example 1: When Actual Weight Exceeds Declared Weight after In-Gate

At the time of booking, the declared weight per package was 1,500 kg, but upon re-weighing at the CFS, it was found that the actual weight was 2,400 kg.

If the weight per package exceeds the standard forklift capacity at the CFS, normal cargo handling cannot continue even if the goods have already been admitted in-gate.

First, verify the weighing records and check whether corrections are needed for the booking, packing list, and export declaration. Next, confirm the availability of large forklifts or cranes, any additional charges, work schedule, and the potential impact on the vessel's planned departure.

If the actual weight was not accurately declared, this changes the basis for acceptance responses and quotation terms, which in turn may affect judgments on bearing additional charges.

Practical Example 2: When an Overlength Wooden Crate Cannot Pass Through the Container Door

The dimensions of the overlength wooden crate fit within the internal length and width of the container, but including the crate’s height and the position when lifted by forklift, it could not pass through the container’s door opening.

Fitting within the container’s internal dimensions and being physically able to be brought inside the container are separate issues. It should be confirmed whether the crate can be tilted, rotated inside the CFS, or lifted and loaded from above.

If loading into a standard dry container is difficult, switching to an Open Top, Flat Rack, or other transport method should be considered, comparing additional freight charges, handling costs, and whether changes to the vessel schedule are required.

Practical Example 3: No-Stack Cargo Reduces LCL Stowage Efficiency

The cargo weight itself was within the typical range manageable by a forklift, but stacking on top of the cargo was prohibited, and contact with the sides was also not allowed.

In this case, even if the volume measured in RT is small, the inability to use the space above or around the cargo inside the container means it actually occupies a large loading space.

The co-loader or NVOCC will consider the cargo combination, loading sequence, and unusable space to decide on conditional acceptance, additional charges, or refusal of acceptance.

The shipper will compare the necessity of the no-stacking requirement, whether conditions can be changed by reinforcement, and the total cost if switching to FCL.

Practical Example 4: Changing from LCL to Flat Rack

Initially, the plan was to handle the cargo as overlength cargo under an LCL service, but considering the cargo's length and width as well as the need for sling operations, it was determined that vanning at a usual CFS would be difficult.

Since using a dry container FCL was not feasible due to door opening and internal dimension restrictions, transport using a Flat Rack was considered.

When changing to a Flat Rack, it is necessary to reconfirm cargo projections, securing methods, port handling, vehicle transport, shipping line acceptance approval, ocean freight, and unloading conditions at the destination side.

Switching from LCL to a special container cannot be decided by a simple freight comparison alone. The total costs—including packing, inland transport, port operations, and local cargo handling—as well as accident risks should be compared.

Even if charge calculation by RT (revenue ton) is possible, this does not guarantee safe handling and loading as LCL. At the quotation stage, actual measurements, actual weight, cargo photos, center of gravity, handling conditions, and stacking conditions should be provided.

If acceptance as LCL is difficult, alternatives such as switching directly to FCL, Open Top, Flat Rack, breakbulk, or other transport methods should be compared.

If issues are discovered after in-gate, special handling, repacking, drayage, storage, or vessel changes may become necessary. Even if additional charges arise, final cost responsibility should be determined by reviewing the declared details, quotation terms, acceptance response, and the history of any changes.
