However, direct co-loading is not always faster, nor is transshipment co-loading always slower. Actual arrival dates and pickup availability vary depending on sailing frequency, departure days, connection margins, congestion levels, destination-side CFS work schedules, and import procedures.
Also, direct co-loading does not necessarily mean “transport without any calls at intermediate ports.” Even if the same vessel or the same consolidated container calls at intermediate ports, it may still be treated as direct co-loading in practice as long as there is no transshipment to another vessel or separate service.

What Is Direct Co-loading?
Direct co-loading is an LCL service where cargo from multiple shippers is vanned into a single container at the CFS on the loading port side, and, in principle, the container is transported to the CFS at the final destination without being transferred to another vessel or another co-loading service en route.
In direct co-loading, the consolidated container prepared at the loading port is basically transported intact to the final destination port. Even if the vessel calls at intermediate ports, it may not involve transshipment to a different vessel or re-consolidation at those relay ports.
Because there are fewer transshipment processes, the following points tend to be easier to manage:
- Scheduled vessel and final ETA
- Container number and cargo location
- Import-side agent and issuer of the Arrival Notice
- Import-side CFS
- Transport segment suspected of any incident
- Scheduling of customs clearance and inland delivery
However, even for direct co-loading, delays in vessel arrival, port congestion, skipped port calls, congestion at the import-side CFS, or document delays could occur. Being direct co-loading alone does not guarantee the arrival date.
What Is Transshipment Co-loading?
Transshipment co-loading refers to an LCL service where cargo is not transported directly from the loading port to the final destination port but is transferred at an intermediate transshipment port onto a different vessel or another co-loading service.

Direct Co-loading Is Not Always Faster
Since direct co-loading involves fewer transshipment processes, it is generally easier to shorten the transit time compared to transshipment co-loading.
However, when the sailing frequency for direct co-loading is low and there is a long wait for the next departure, transshipment co-loading with more frequent sailings may arrive at the final destination earlier.

In transshipment co-loading, LCL cargo is consolidated at major ports where cargo volumes and routes converge, and from there, connections are made to multiple destinations.

With direct co-loading, it tends to be relatively easier to confirm cargo location using the House B/L number, vessel name, container number, and final ETA.
For transshipment co-loading, it may not be possible to grasp the cargo status up to the final destination port using only the initial vessel information. After arrival at the transshipment port, the connecting vessel or container number may be changed.

Transshipment co-loading may provide options for ocean freight charges by consolidating cargo at a hub port. However, even if the displayed ocean freight appears cheaper, the total final cost may not be less than direct co-loading.

Example 1: When Transshipment Co-loading Is Faster Than Waiting for Direct Co-loading Departure
Direct co-loading operates twice a month, with a ten-day wait until the next departure. On the other hand, transshipment co-loading departs weekly, and even after factoring in the standard connection days at the transshipment port, the scheduled arrival date at the final destination is earlier than that of direct co-loading.
In this case, rather than assuming "direct means faster," compare the earliest possible CFS in-gate date, the next ETD, the connection buffer time at the transshipment port, and the final ETA.
However, transshipment co-loading carries the risk of connection failure. Confirm the subsequent sailing dates if the shipment misses the standard connecting vessel and the worst-case estimated arrival time.
Selection should be based not only on the shortest transit time under normal conditions but also on the potential delay if connections fail.
Example 2: Arranging Exhibition Cargo by Transshipment Co-loading
The transshipment co-loading option with lower freight charges was selected, aiming for the cargo to arrive a few days before the exhibition start date. However, the vessel on the first leg was delayed, causing a missed connection to the scheduled feeder vessel at the transshipment port.
As the next sailing was a week later, the cargo is expected to arrive after the exhibition has begun.
For exhibition cargo, it is necessary to set sufficient time not only for the usual ETA but also for possible missed connections, customs clearance, devanning, and inland delivery requirements.
For cargoes with significant losses if delivery deadlines are not met, direct co-loading, air transport, or early shipment options should be compared.
Example 3: Delayed Arrival Notice in Transshipment Co-loading
The connecting vessel was changed at the transshipment port, but this information was not promptly shared with the agent at the final destination, resulting in a delayed issuance of the Arrival Notice.
The importer became aware of the cargo arrival late, causing delays in preparing customs clearance documents and arranging inland delivery.
In this case, it is necessary to distinguish whether the cargo itself was delayed or if only the document information communication was delayed.
After departure from the transshipment port, confirm the final ETA, the import-side CFS, the party issuing the Arrival Notice, and the conditions for starting the free storage period.
Example 4: When a Shortage Is Found After Re-consolidation
Upon devanning at the import-side CFS, although the House B/L and Packing List indicated twelve cartons, only eleven cartons were confirmed.
Since re-consolidation was performed at the transshipment port on an intermediate co-load, records of vanning at the export-side CFS, devanning and vanning into a new container at the transshipment port, and devanning at the import-side CFS are compared.
If twelve cartons were loaded on the export side, but only eleven cartons were confirmed at the transshipment port, the investigation focuses on the first leg or the status upon arrival at the transshipment port.
If records show that twelve cartons were vanned into a new container at the transshipment port but only eleven cartons were found on the import side, verification focuses on the connecting segment or import-side sorting.
Cargo Insurance and Freight Forwarder Liability Insurance
Regardless of whether you use direct co-loading or transshipment co-loading, it is important to check the coverage details of marine cargo insurance.
In transshipment co-loading, since transshipment, storage, or re-consolidation occurs at the intermediate port, it is necessary to obtain records for the first leg, the transshipment port, and the connecting leg in case of an incident.
Marine cargo insurance compensates for damage to the cargo itself under the terms of the insurance contract. However, damages caused solely by vessel delays, missed connections, or delays in the Arrival Notice are different issues from ordinary cargo damage, and coverage depends on the policy wording.
If the prime freight forwarder fails to inform that transshipment co-loading is used, neglects to notify significant connection changes, or fails to obtain incident records, you should verify the relationship with the freight forwarder liability insurance.
However, simply choosing transshipment co-loading or occurrence of connection delays does not automatically establish the prime freight forwarder’s liability. It is necessary to confirm the contracting status, explanations given, nature of the scheduled dates, reasons for delays, applicable clauses, and actual responses.
